Caniços Well Walking Trail

Sandy trail (without walkways) along a dune ridge parallel to the coast and the system of “wells” (wet inter-dune depressions) connected to the central body of the Santo André lagoon. These “wells” are important feeding, nesting and refuge sites for several species of aquatic birds that can be observed from an observation structure located at the northern end of the trail.

This trail has landscape and geomorphological aspects of great beauty that reveal the regional setting of this nature reserve, particularly in the physiographic unit of the Tróia-Sines arch. The predominant vegetation is formed by pine forests, maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), and dune scrubland, with marcetão (Santolina impressa), sabina-das-praias (Juniperus turbinata), thyme (Thymus spp.), camarinheira (Corema album) heather and gorse.
